Abstract: The Arctic is gaining the position of an important strategic and geopolitical area and the extension of the legal continental shelf cannot be considered only as a “race for resources” in terms of economic benefits, but in the end it brings with it both political and socio-economic benefits. The article presents a comprehensive analysis of the current status of submissions to the Commission for the Limits of the Continental Shelf regarding the Arctic Ocean and the stage in which they currently are. It also approaches a legal definition of the continental shelf, the work of the Commission and compares the view of the Arctic states on particular seafloor highs.
