Abstract: The paper deals with the representation and transfer of cultural identity in a selected novel by Slovak author Pavol Rankov (Stalo sa prvého septembra (alebo inokedy) [It Happened on the First of September (or Some Other Time)], 2019) in the translational communication into the German language and cultural space (Es geschah am ersten September (oder ein andermal), 2014). Cultural identity is understood as a set of signs, symbols, values, behaviours, and linguistic specifics through which an individual expresses their affiliation with a certain culture, nation, ethnicity, religion, etc. The theoretical part of the paper presents various approaches to understanding identity, including its specific features. In a comparative analysis (Slovak original – German translation) of selected examples representing cultural identity at the linguistic and non-linguistic levels, the author analyses the translation procedures and strategies used as well as the reception specifics associated with the source and target linguocultural spaces.
