Abstract. This study analyzes the phenomenon of hate in socio-political discourse, emphasizing the methodological distinction between hate (as a psychological attitude) and verbal aggression (as behaviour), thereby questioning their direct identification. The main section focuses on the historical precedent set by the 19th-century literary critic, Vissarion Belinsky. Under Tsarist censorship, Belinsky transformed his publicist criticism into an ideological instrument for social transformation. His "furious" and un-compromising language was shaped by a unique blend of personal psychological maximalism and political necessity. The paper argues that Belinsky established a lasting tradition in Russian culture of using hateful language as a legitimate polemical method. The de-canonization of this image is hindered by the enduring historical myth of Belinsky, which obscures the complexity of his personality and language—a phenomenon persisting to this day.
